Whin?

Does anyone here use the word whin to describe gorse? I mean is that the first word you would think of when you see the bushes?

I'm familiar with the term, but I don't use it and it doesn't seem to be in common usage around here.

We use it. Whin bushes are gorse, sometimes broom if you can't see it nearby but you know it's one or t'other.
I'm in Lanarkshire, but friends in Stirling use the same word, as does at least one Glaswegian I know.

Not heard it, furse is the other word I'd use for gorse. It's been flowing for a few weeks already down here, whatever that may mean.

There's also whin stone though. It's a hard stone, much used for paving.

Yeah, we use it round here.
When I was a kid I missheard it and thought it was Wind bushes and called em that for a few years. Yeah, I'm a spanner.

The dead and dry bits from the inside of the bush are great in a kelly kettle.

If anyone following this thread has not yet come across Robert Macfarlane 's book "LANDMARKS" , I recommend it to you. It is a study of the words used in different dialects to describe the natural world.

We use that term up in Aberdeenshire as well as gorse and broom.
