We use it. Whin bushes are gorse, sometimes broom if you can't see it nearby but you know it's one or t'other.
I'm in Lanarkshire, but friends in Stirling use the same word, as does at least one Glaswegian I know.
If anyone following this thread has not yet come across Robert Macfarlane 's book "LANDMARKS" , I recommend it to you. It is a study of the words used in different dialects to describe the natural world.
