Which cotton fabric to make a Shemagh?

I know they are pretty cheap, but we fancy making our own.....any suggestions of which type of cotton fabric they are made from please, shirt cotton seems too good a quality....being fairly new to sewing sometimes we need to know what the fabric is called, like Egyptian Cotton, or whatever...anyroadup anyideas?....

Perhaps a sarong will work or one of those wraps ladies use at the beach.

No disrespect intended effect but making your own shemagh is a bit like deconstructing an apple crumble. A lot of faffing about and not as good as the original. I am no expert but I do believe a decent shemagh is individually woven rather than made from a piece of material.

I'd be looking for the sort of linen or cotton fabric that tea towels are made from.

An old bedsheet would work well, more of a sweat rag though really.
