For me it depended how lazy I felt. 
Sometimes I just loosened the laces and slept in them, as already mentioned handy for a midnight pee trip. Sometimes laces tied and hung over the tarp line or wrapped in a canvas bag and used to prop my pillow up. Must admit I hadn't thought of using sticks as boot stands.
