I always like reading topics like this on forums as it gives a good demographic about who does what and why they do it.

I'll start

I am a Design Engineer specialized in Fire Protection and Sprinkler Design.

I've always been into anything outdoors since I was a child. Started off in cub scouts/scouts and adventure scouts. I've always liked being outdoors as I find the solitude lovely and I like to be able to test myself and learn new things. I believe that in todays technological age that people have lost the old skills needed to be able to look after themselves when there isn't a mobile etc around.

What does everyone else do?

I'm an accounts manager for people with disabilities who receive direct payments, they receive funding from the council and then employ their own carers. I do bookkkeping for them and run payroll, office based but its not too bad.

Have always loved the woods, nature and the countryside since I was a kid and had some woods at the bottom of my parents garden. Teenage years came and I lost my interest of the great outdoors until about 10 years ago when my mate recommended watching a chap called Ray Mears (sure some of you may have heard of him) and that sparked my love of the woods back up again and I try to spend as much time with nature as I can (not easy considering I live in the middle of town, but there are a few pockets of niceness, nature reserves etc) and can think of nothing better than sitting in the woods listening to the sounds of nature.

Great thread by the way. :)

For me it has never been about camping, just about being outdoors. I've been a nature lover since childhood.

I work in a call centre for a cancer charity.

I am a consultant working for a company who specialise in chemical risk. My specific specialism is in emergency planning (which I used to do for a local authority).

I too was in the cubs/scouts, then during my teens fell out of love with the outdoors (what an eejit!), now I am a wee bit older and wiser I am trying to get back into camping/bushcraft as an escape from the busy world I work in. Very interested in learning some new skills (desperately needed - my first attempt at tarpology this past weekend was a shocker!) and indulging in a bit of kit comparison/envy with likeminded others.

I'm a support worker for a guy with an acquired brain injury - I love my work, but it can get chaotic at times so I see bushcraft as a calm and quiet pasttime - time I can spend with myself or my wife and daughter. Lots to learn and all the time to learn it in.

Im self employed and i install household wind and solar power systems, rainwater harvesting systems and advise people building a house on how tomake it passive solar.

Dont know how i got into the craft really, possibly my minimalist, self reliant enviromentalist viewpoint. im lucky enough that i m not too into modern materialism prefering to make my own stuff. I'm lucky enough that i only need to work 16 or less hours a week so i get to spend nearly all my time making stuff or walking/ camping.

On the weekends, I play with axe's and go camping when its -10. My 'yin and yang' I guess.

I work for an IT support company and fix computers in the clients call centers.

I have always liked the outdoors, cubs, scouts and ventures as a kid. I still like going out for walk in the wilds. Wish I knew as much about the plants and animals about me when I'm out but that will come. Think what I enjoy most now is taking my girls out in to the woods and passing on my limited knowledge to them so they can enjoy the outdoors as much as I do.

I'm a GoApe instructor set in the beautiful Sherwood pines forest! I truely love what I do, being outdoors everyday and working with people who love to be outdoors too (well the majority) and it works hand in hand with other jobs that I do. (gardener/landscape and bushcraft instructor)My main dream in life wich is becoming more and more of a reality is to become a full time bushcraft instructor. I'm currently doing a certificated bushcraft mentoring scheme and leading sessions with both woodland survival crafts and the forestry commision. My dream is too is to gain knowledge for the rest of my days and become a full time instructor and do what I love everyday and pass it in to others.I could easaly rant on all day about the love I have and importance that bushcraft brings to me but I'm sure you all feel the same as me and that's why I love this forum so much! Great people sharing knowlage and wrightfully doing it all for free out of love for nature.Life should be earned and not spent..(great thread by the way!)

I'm retired after a working life mostly in various roles in Primary education with special interest in Art : now I've found out what I wanted to do when I left school. Seriously, it's been a lifelong interest and I can't remember a time when I haven't wanted to be in the Outdoors. As a child, every weekend from Spring to Autumn was spent camping out. Now I divide my time between the Oxfordshire countryside on my doorstep and where the Pyrenees meet the Mediterranean coast. My working life gave me the chance to travel all over Europe and across the United States seeking out the wild places and the opportunity to preach survival skills to a lot of children- some of whom were actually interested!

I'm a nurse in intensive care. Very lucky to be part time sharing the child care with my wife who is also part time (don't see the point in working full time in order to pay someone to look after the kids while I work to pay for someone to look after.......... You get the idea!)

Always loved the outdoors. As a youngster lots of family picnics in Strath Connon, making dens in woods near my house etc etc. bushcraft is just the natural extension of this along with the formal recognition of what your actually doing and learning.

Every day I remember how fortunate I am living in beautiful Royal Deeside, even if I don't get much time camping what with the wee ones...

Canoe coach, bushcraft instructor, writer for outdoor magazine titles, craftworker, "extra" for film work, author of several books on DIY clothing and kit, several on hiking in West Wales, one on cycling: ex- expedition leader, climbing instructor, clothing designer and manufacturer, sewing machinist and labourer :) :Trained Aromatherapist: ex- Scoutleader (OK - that was unpaid... but it took up more time than work)
In my spare time I am a relief support worker for Mencap and do volontary work at our church...
And you want to know why I do it?
Guess!:D
Most of it revolves around Bushcraft and/or helping people (a lot of the bushcraft tuition is for people with issues, most of the other tuition through charities for young people trying to find themselves - such as Raliegh Int and The Princes Trust.
We are here to help people :)
The Outdoors is a great place to realy get destressed and decluttered - either as a way to relax or as a place to help other folk get it together :)

I'm a self employed Decorator and Carpenter and run a small business from home, mainly doing domestic work in my locality. Before that I've worked in forestry, window fitting and as a lorry driver.

I've always loved being outdoors and have a string of hobbies that have revolved around being outside. I grew up in a village, moved to town and then back to the country again.

Fishing, kart racing and mountain bike racing with bouts of 'survival' weeks and camping filled my hobby time as a youngling. Nowadays, I've swapped the bike for a kayak, love lightweight backpacking especially in adverse weather, playing in the snow in the winter and bimbling round camp. I also enjoy making and using my own gear and the vast majority of my kit is homemade.

As I'm primarily a backpacker and choose to carry my pack up and down mountains, I'll always err on the lightweight side of things.

Started as a baker, then pastry chef, commis, sous & head chef, also had various breaks and taken other occupations for one reason or another, electrician, dust & fume extraction erector, steel erector, decorator, just add chef inbetween every other occupation, now semi-retired chef, hoping to be nothing more than Dad who cooks dinner as soon as I can, young mans game chefing done enough time in the kitchen over the years. :) Quite a boring collection of careers compared to some I guess but ya takes what you can get and what ya can do.
