What wood?

Can anyone id this wood? a poor photo I know.

Might help if you told us what the object was. Certain timbers are preferred for certain purposes. Might help narrow down the wood.

Looks like a mahogany colour to me, though some like merante can be similarly dark.

I took the leg off a piece of furniture desk here's another poor pic.

I have tried on Google but to no avail.

Tropical hardwood, it will be dense hard and durable. No way of giving positive ID without putting a sliver under a microscope, anything else is guesswork.

It looks like true mahogany as the false ones tend be less red and have 'silvering grain'.
