What tree?

Easy when you know.....those cut logs look just right for a wood fire, could that be the reason they were cut ? or prehaps the landowner is planning to pass a tractor underneath or he hasn't finished & is going to cut the whole thing down !

The whole tree is now gone, no idea why.

Absolutely 100% certainly beech.

Bark shows it clearly

You can even clearly see the leaves at the botton right hand corner of the second pic.

One of our commonest trees.

Thats a real shame, tree looks v healthy no sign of die back and isn't overhanging public footpath etc. Sometimes I think chainsaws make life too easy, if you had to fell with axe and cross cut you might think a bit longer how long that tree had stood there and the pros and cons of keeping vs felling.

Beech, no question, from the bark, and dense canopy. Wrong shape for Hornbeam, wrong habitat for Alder.

This sort of tree loss is really frustrating, as it doesn't really contribute anything to the landowner by its absence. In fact it probably provided useful shelter to livestock.

Am going to try and learn some tree identification soon but concentration on wild edibles at the moment

No idea why the tree was cut down, looked healthy, it was out of the way and all seemed well
