We have just grown our fist pumpkin, well I say just but you get the idea, and we are wondering what to do with the seeds.

How would we prepare them for planting next year, and are they edible?

Cheers

Paul

Yeah they're edible, in fact they're bloody good for you. Full of zinc and iron, Just roast them for 20 mins in a low oven and they'll keep for months.

We wash them thoroughly, salt them lightly and spread them on a baking sheet in a low oven. That's if you want to eat them.

If you want to save them for planting, the first thing to do is make sure you aren't wasting your time; Try to remember if you bought a hybrid species. If you did, it's likely the seeds are sterile and will not germinate. If not, proceed to step two.

Step two would be drying them. Wash them with warm, soapy water to get the gunk off. Pat them dry or strain them, then spread them out to air dry for a few weeks, the longer the better. Store in a paper bag in a cool, dark place until you're ready to plant.

If your packet of seeds is marked "F1 Hybrid", then your fruit from that generation of seeds probably bears sterile seeds, as Voivode pointed out.

I eat a few seeds raw, as I'm cutting up the flesh. But most of them go out in the garden, with all the rind, for the animals.

In my opinion oil is the best. It is sooooo healthy!
Have a small Nalgene 50ml of pumpkin seed oil on tour. You just need some
drops, the taste is very intense.
