So what about Litter? I'm born and bred country boy so it sticks out to me in the countryside here , but I never really frequented the cities as a young lad.
I guess I'm asking is - do we think our social values have dropped?
I think, well I know, 'cos I dug for a living, that 'litter' is not just more prolific, but less biodegradable, and, folks don't burn stuff the same way they did in the past.
Anything that would burn was burnt.
I know folks who used to stay to help clear up at jumble sales so that they could take the unwanted bags of leather shoes....to burn. They owned their own house, but they scrimped and scraped to do it. One pair of old shoes smouldered and gave out heat all night.
I know of folks who wrapped up vegetable peelings in newspaper and put them at the back of the fire to smoulder slowly all night. Every bit of unwanted paper ended up on the fire.
Fuel was fuel if I make myself clear.
We fieldwalk because everything that went in the midden went on the fields, and the ashes and so on ended up in the middens. Amazing what turns up at times.
Thankfully all that 'fuel is fuel' pretty much all stopped before the unbelievable deluge of plastic every damned thing overtook our world.
I mind black soot on everything. Washing hanging outside and rained upon needed re-washed.
Not now. Imagine that with burning plastic in the mix too
I think plastic is the biggest bugbear, that and that it's virtually impossible to seperate the components of some things....a pringles can for instance, it's not just paper, it's plastic, it has metal bits, and printing inks and glue too.
Have our social values dropped though ?
I think too many don't care. I think that makes it harder for those of us who do.
I admit it's a pet peeve of mine. I hate seeing litter, I really dislike the dumb dumpers and their selfish laziness.
