Hi

What type of belt do you guys normally use when out in the woods?

I want a belt that is strong enough to take several pouches too, so should i go for a leather one or an army issue one???

cheers fro the advice

I use leather because if yo get a good one they are strong and it has the advantage that that you can take it off and use it as a strop when sharpening your knife!

wilderbeast has said it all realy, no other material can do that. its something i been meening to get:rolleyes:
also if your a hardcore survivalist you can even eat it:D lol

I currently use a cheap ish leather one I picked up at the new forest show. nice fairly wide leather belt for about £6, and its held up realy well so far. my absolute favorite belts where also purchased at the new forest show, the first was a brown one two years ago, from an individual maker, who i think mainly did saddlework, but was selling belts. the next year (when I was working there) I went out of my way to find the same stall, to purchase the same belt design, in black, which just shows how much I loved this belt. I also have a scouts uniform belt, which I used to use, but is now wearing out.

I prefer leather partly because it seems more comfortable, and partly because almost every webbing type trouser belt I have seems to rub in an uncomfortable way, and all other designs are just too "fashion" or "army" for my tastes. The only one that works for me at all was the belt that came free with my craghoppers, and that doesn't support a leatherman whatsoever.

on the other hand leather doesn't take as well to getting wet.

next new forest show I attend, I'm going back to the maker of my thinner two, and getting a couple more (maybe something a little thicker, and I think I saw a money type belt there too....)

I have a 5.11 Tactical operator's belt, which is stiffened, originally to take a holster and weapon. It is ideal for supporting pouches, but if you're using it for this purpose you'll probably want another belt to hold your trousers up!

I got a Mearsy one... very supple from day one and yet still built like a tank... I have actually abseiled using it as a harness and it's none the worse for wear.

Yes it's uncomfortably expensive but it will outlast me and money / time still gives great value.

i like to use a west german Bw grey/green web belt..its very plain and strong (made of nylon/cotton mix) and does not look to military,it also has a O.D. painted brass buckle which can be polished to shine..vince g. 11b inf....

3mm Veg tan, buckle from Oxfam -saddle stitched in place - , hand embossed and then heavily waxed to make it immune to water...several folks on the site will do them for you or you could try it yourself!

Yup - like everyone else, I use a normal everyday leather belt. Nothing special.
Have a look in your local TK Maxx or, as John suggests, have a peek in a charity shop.

cheers for all the advice, greatly appreciated and valued.

I think to keep things balanced i should get a leather one and a tactical one :-)

Having has an Army one holding my trousers up for the last 22 years ( OK for the first 15 then my belly did that for me) I am a bit biased.

The main problem with them is the width of it for most "civilian attachments" such as knife pouches etc. You can with a bit of effort get them on but I then leave them attached

The trick is to have 2 belts... one holding your trousers up and one for knives, pouches etc... handy to just be able to take the kit belt off and hang it up when you like.

Then, as you say Martin, just leave all your kit attached to the kit one.

I currently use a saami knife belt as seen on the left side of the pic below.

My kuksa and knife is attatched to it. This belt is worn outside my outer clothes.
I use an ordinary leather belt for holding my trousers up
Earlier I used a military web belt as my knife belt.
