They cover a fairly large area on acid soil, about 2-3' high

Don't think it's Tutsan as they have longer leaves & arranged in pairs along the stem as Matthew says....I think adamiano's red stemmed spinach (vine spinach) is the best bet & it also has purple berries.

This is nothing like Tutsan! It is certainly not Japanese Knotweed either.. I'll go with the red-stemmed spinach, I'd never heard of it before today, interesting one :)

You know, I looked at the photos of tutsan and thought I recognised the berries - think that might be growing in my garden. The plant I posted about is in the woods

Old thread (and not sure what Jessy11 is on about) but took some more pictures now the berries are out:

Leaves don't look like shallon or malabar spinach

That's odd - I was out with a friend and my son having a cursory Fungal Foray and found these on our way back from the woods:

I reckon they look more like Gaultheria shallon more than the red stemmed spinach mentioned earlier in thread - but I only took this one photo. Gonna pop back get positive ID and try some of those berries... the place we saw this growing was escaping out of a garden on the fringe of a wooded hillside, West facing but still a pretty shaded spot.

Many random internetters say that these taste sweet and good! Lots of mentions of Gaultheria shallon and Mahonia aquifolium (Oregon Grapes) as a jam.... after successfully making and selling Prunus cerasifera (Purple Cherry Plum) Jam, I'm definitely gonna get some and jam/jelly 'em up.

Well. I ate some. Tasted OK and haven't suffered any ill effects so far. It's a pity they've mostly gone now but I'll know for next year
