What’s your top scone recipe?

It was scone baking day today.

It surprises me that there is such a variety of different recipes out there for the humble scone.

Some years back I found this one and it’s really quite good, though I substitute plain yoghurt for the buttermilk. One occasion two eggs have ended up in the mix and it take sit ok.

I have to hold my hands up and admit to never having made scones. My favourite though, are with strong cheddar and black pepper

I confess that mine are usually by, "What do I have ? and that looks right".....and I agree @Stew that yoghurt's a good addition. It kicks the baking powder up a notch

I mostly bake mine on the girdle (cast iron bake stone) and I rarely bother to cut them out, usually just patting them into rounds and cutting in farls.

Cheese ones are tasty and very good with soup or stew

Top tip. Dont roll it out. Shape lightly by hand, and bake soon after adding liquid as the raising agent is initiated by water. Result- ugly scones with beautiful texture.

I use the cranks cheese scones recipe. Whenever I've entered them into village fete or flower and produce shows , they have always made first prize.
I've made Stilton and red onion chutney ones which were absolutely cracking,
Am tempted to make some wild garlic and cheddar scones. Havnt made scones for years, as I have a tendency to bake a dozen, and non get cold!

And that's another tip, eat on day of baking, as they dont keep well, like they get the chance
