Could be anything smaller than a spaniel really. Is there any sign around other than the dirt scraped away?
I've Hedgehogs under mine - Hope you identify fully before putting a trap out.
Looks a bit wide for a rat, I wonder if a fox made a start then stopped.
Not much, really. It looks like something has been digging around the garden, though we do have a huge population of squirrels in the trees behind the house.
Our neighbours recently had a major rat issue. We ended up trapping a dozen using the diving fence line as a run, which is why I’m paranoid about rats at the moment.
We have been hearing foxes most nights at the moment, so that is a possibility.

Don’t worry. The traps are caged and can only be entered from above, meaning it will only target rats and potentially squirrels. However, I have only ever caught rats in them.
A rat could stroll in through the gap on the far left between the slab and timber. No digging needed.

This is probably totally off left field, but I have a hollow the double of that under my side fence. It's where the young badgers come into the garden to dig up worms and larvae.
Most likely yours' is a fox having a go, but, well, you never know
Are there any tracks in the loose soil though ? Tracks are very distinctive.
You could put down a couple of shovels full of loose stuff and see what comes back ?

If you think is active put some sand down and see if it leaves tracks!
Just to be clear, have we definitely ruled out Borrowers?

I did wonder if you could leave something out to gnaw, to see if there are any teeth marks.
No scent, though I haven’t tried sticking my head under the shed, so will give it another sniff tomorrow.
If you come out with a rat attached to your nose you have your answer.
