Thought I'd learn some more about the Firebox stove and have a play in the garden using Kiln dried Birch.

This is my every day home stove Axe. I spotted it in a builders merchants for £7 a few years ago but the head was painted blue and it had a fiberglass shaft epoxied on, soon sorted that out

I keep a few Sulphur matches Flint and steel and some odd bits of Jute twine in a tinter tin but the Char cloth and Amadou lives in a tin kept on the house stove so that it's always dry (just have to remember to put some in the tinder tin when I go out)

Alright, I realise I shall proably get a slagging off for asking in such a manner.....but what on earth is happening when birch is being shipped over from Latvia to be burnt in chimneas in the UK. It's as bad as buying Asparagus from bloody Chile.. There is plenty of wood lying around all over the place for nowt..

Latvia not only has vast Birch forests but it has a very hard winter so the wood is mutch denser, and has thicker bark, and burns better than UK Birch.
I've been 'burnt' (pun intended) buying UK logs a few times to find them not seasoned never mind kiln dried and use most of their heat boiling the sap out, and useless for lighting the home (hot water/central heating) stove when split into kindling. At £3:99 a sack it's so much more convenient to pick one up with the weekly shop and use it in the Chimeneas and lighting the house stove rather than all the effort required in 'progging' wood as coming up 70 I ask myself how long will it take me and how much is my time worth ?
