Marty T has just posted a new series on building water powered generator from a washing machine

Just a tid bit: water needs to fall 420 m to warm up one degree C if all the potential energy is converted into heat.

Depends on how cheap you can manage to do this but if you can have a go cheaply at the very least you'll learn a lot.
If you're just lighting a few LED lights and maybe charging a battery that doesn't usually take much energy.
Try boiling a lecky kettle or using a breadmaker and you'll likely suffer from lack of electrons.
