Oh, I don't think the Irish have a monopoly on hitting people with sticks In Wales 'short sticks' were typically hawthorn instead of blackthorn though for some reason.

Its worth noting that you can steam bend (or in this case steam straighten) wood.
Bung it into a length of pipe with an inlet and outlet (might need a bigger diameter pipe to straighten something than you would to steam for bending something thats already straight) steam it til its hot and dripping using an old style kettle or wallpaper stripper.
Pull it out and have at it.


If bending you often need something to form it to the shape of to keep it consistent.
The boatyard by The Windermere Jetty Project were doing it when I was building the massive sheds next door.
