Yep, ther was a sign explains that they were taking out any evasive trees to make the charcoal.
How do they catch them?
Lol, good spot "invasive" ipad spellchecker and my fat fingers are a bad combo.
I wonder how it works? From the looks of that lid it would take two men to lift it, and I can't imagine how you would lift that on or off without burning yourself to death once it was going.
IS it not a case of stacking all the wood with a fire hole in the middle then putting the lid on. It sort of smoulders away then you knock out all air ingress, then off you go until its all cooled down and turned to charcoal.
Fill it with invasive species, mainly rhodies, leaving as little airspace as possible, light with lid open and once ablaze, put lid on and seal edges with a couple small vents and it cooks itself, burning off the volatiles leaving the charcoal behind. On a kiln that size it takes about 24 hours from start to finish and you have to be on hand to regulate it.
