Here on Islay we are piloting for the John Muir Trust ,a new moving on 3 day course -
Journeyman -
It will be based under Bivvy/tenatge along coastal and wilderness hills on Islay based on travelling light and simply utilising bushcraft skills exploring/discovering/comserving and sharing. The third night wil be in a local hotel for a brushup/debrief,nosh and accomodation.
We pick you up from the ferry port and supply everything. All you need is a rucsac, sleepingbag/mat and clothes and a sense of humour!
All we ask is a small contribution of £40.

Interested? See the Islaybirding Website or call me on 01496 850010

Jeremy,

I'm down for it and have asked my team if any of them are interested.

Will check out your website - after the match.

Gary.

It sounds very good.....I'm sure you'll get quite a few after a place at that price! maybe a bit costly getting up there though  If not for that I would be on the list!

Guys, Jeremy told me the dates were over the weekend 23 - 26 July 2004 - but I would make sure he confirms this.

Should be interesting, and an area I've never worked as a bushcrafter.

Gary is right. 24-26 July. We drop you off at Port Ellen for the early boat
on the Tuesday.
If people are interesed I have joining instructions to email.

There are only six places available and the contribution cost is £40.
You need to get here of course and although it seems expensive the ferry
crossing for foot passenger is about £12 return. There are busses that conect Glasgow to Kennecraig at a reasonable cost too.

Please contact me via
info@islaybirding.co.uk
or 01496 850010
for joining instructions.
All the best

To confirm - we pick you up on Friday 1505 or 2020hrs from the ferry port .Please advise as to the best time for you folks - It would be good for you to tavel on the same ferry. Although Islay is small distances on single track raods can be big!

I have a four places left...! Oh er! so don't delay.

That, of course is Friday 23 July and departing Monday 26 July first boat.

Good link Leon - dont think I'll be taking the car across! Hope theres a good car park on the main land!

Fantastic now I just need someone who wants a lift to share the fuel costs and I'm a happy bunny!

bus timetables glasgow to kennacraig outward and return No hints on prices

cheapish flights to Glasgow Prestwick with BMIBaby look to be between £40 and £50 each way from Cardiff

General info about getting to Islay here

need to work out the budget/leave combinations......

Sorry to have been out of touch I have been Sea Kayaking till the Gales blew up this morning. Should have been leading a tour on Jura today but ferry not running!

Getting here! Thanks for this James. The cost between Glasgow and Kennacraig is not too costly about £20return.

Leon I have emailed you and have as place saved for you.

Cheers

Unfortunately I'm unable to travel up for the journeyman course in July. However I would say to all of those who are interested in going that Islay is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places on the West coast of the UK, and in particular the area that will be covered during the course is completely unspoilt and absolutely stunning.

I spend a lot of time on Islay as my other half is from Bowmore, I think that it's fantatsic that Jeremy is working to improve people's awareness of thils little known area.

The weather however is changeable to say the least, but it is the West of Scotland after all!

To those of you that are interested in travelling from South Wales, I usually fly from Cardiff with BMi Baby to either Edinburgh or Glasgow Prestwick, as both are as easily accessible to Glasgow as each other. If you book early enough you can get flights for about £35 return. Transfers are easy enough from both airports, however check out the bus times from Glasgow around to Kennacraig where the ferry goes from as the journey takes over three hours and , beautiful though it is accomodation is sometimes difficult to find if you miss the ferry.

All the best,
