I just came across these video tutorials posted over on Paleoplanet. From Dino Labiste - one of Americas formost hand-drill performers.

I now found an explanation for my blisters!

I've not managed to get the videos to work yet (works internet security!), but the other articles on the site are fab. I especially like the ancient egyptian bow drill idea!

Hey Buddy,
If you want inspiration, see Rich59 - I went to see him at the summer moot, for a chat to get some tips as I was in a hurry to be somewhere. He invited me to have a go so he could see my stance and technique - next thing you know theres an ember the size of a walnut glowing bright red as we both chatted away. mind you, the next one was a challenge to get - its getting marginally less hard now (I was going to say "getting easier" but thats not an accurate description of things).
Like the bowdrill, you can try till you're blue in the face, then one day it will click and you have your ember.
Another project for the cellar methinks.
