Oh dear, just watched the whole program with my mouth salivating overtime, for his idea of BBQ-ing read open fire, some of those babies are happening within the next 24 hours. As he would say "YUM".
Of to plan next trip away.

i was impressed by the lady who kept cattle on the park in Cambridge. more people should do that sort of thing.

OK Johnnytheboy,

Now I warn you that if you have access to chickens this is fun though maybe not PC!

First take a relatively calm chicken, you have to be able to hold it without it going mental - you don't want to stress the wee thing, or it's no eggys for yer tea.
Holding the chicken in one hand on the ground, slowly bring a stick of chalk up to its face, you may have to waggle the chalk slowly to get the chickens attention.
Once it's looking intently at the chalk, SLOWLY move the stick down to wards the ground... the chicken at this point should follow its movement.
Once the stick is at ground level, very slowly draw a straight line from just in front of its beak in a gracefully movement away from engrossed chicken.
Don't go mad, just slowly draw a line about six inches long, and at the end slowly remove the chalk from the chickens eye-line and palm it.
Carefully and quietly let go of the chicken and move back gently.
The chicken will stay for ages ( you may even have to give it a start to get it to move) staring at the line you've drawn, in a hypnotic like trance.
Don't know what use this has, but lets just say that time goes slowly on a farm :eek: and it's not illegal.
Similar tricks can be used to poach pheasants...:Wow: , taking advantage of certain strange programing that bird brains have. Will expand on that too if you like... purely for knowledge sake, would never condone poaching pheasants. :naughty:

I do like Valentine, he and Hugh are pretty much the "bushcraft" cooks for me... well apart from Les Hiddens... though some of his stuff looked dodgy. I think the first two show that food can be good and wholesome as well as cooked nicely over a fire. Also have the Wild Gourmet book... never saw the program, but their stuff is also yumm.

Not sure I see the point of getting close enough to pick up a pheasant only to then put it down again and hope it's in a trance.
Surely if your going to poach it once you're close enough you pick it up and go?

I watched it last night.
It annoys me that I just dislike fish so much. I really can't stand fish (mind you, I do love sea food - prawns, whelks, mussels, that kind of thing). It's a shame because I LOVE the look of fish and the myriad varieties and how easy they are to cook. I WANT to like fish, really do. Every now and then I try some, thinking my tastes have changed. But I don't. The horrid truth is, I just bloody HATE the taste of fish. This is a constant annoyance, especially when I watch cooking programmes and see the fish and how just gorgeous it looks and how I'd love to eat it and enjoy it. Just like they showed on Valentine Warner's programme last night.
What a wicked world.

Watched this earlier when i was up with the young one, i saw last weeks as well, i think they're really good, straight forward and he's quite good to watch. I'll be watching the next.

I'm going to move this to the grub section :D
