If you're happy with reconditioned machines, I can recommend the Dyson DC04 - it's a beast and certainly better than the DC40 it replaced

I think you have some Industrial machinery in your workshop do you not, Steve?
We used to use a Sebo for industrial quantities of plastic swarf.
I think we used what is now called the 36 wet/dry.

What do folks use for a workshop vac or would recommend?

I still use an old Titan ShopVac from Screwfix. It is still working OK. Had it for about 15 years now.
Very powerful, and rugged vac. I am not sure if Screwfix still sells them.

We have a Henry in the house and a Hetty in the garage.

We inherited a brand new Dyson battery operated vac a couple of years ago, wife prefers it to the Henry as it more convenient and easier to use. However we both use the Henry more than the Dyson as the Dyson run time just isnt long enough, never was and is only getting shorter. At some point it will need a new battery which I suspect will cost more than a new Henry Hoover!

The Henrys will last practically for ever, spares are readily available and pretty easy to fit yourself if you have any simple DIY skills. The power board went on one of ours, a new board was about £12 and half hour to fit.

So I wouldnt recommend anything with a battery unless you put convenience before cost (and the environment) and have a very small or very clean house :-)

Check it out, there are some conversion kits that enable cordless Dysons to be run on power tool batteries which is great if you have need of a battery to run a power tool - just rob it off the vacuum cleaner

Usefull to know thankyou :-) But I will never see my power tool batteries ever again!

Our old Dyson DC40 is still going strong. It is about 15 years old now. So we will be keeping it for cleaning the carpets in the living room and halls. But battery operated Samsung JET95 seems to have great sucktion and also reasonably ok run-time. If needed, we might try to get a spare battery through time.

It comes with also the hard floor cleaning mops which looks useful, and for corners, and narrow space cleaning, it seems it will do well. Also if any spiders or wood lice or moths are around in the house, then they will be quickly eaten up by the chordless vacuum.

When I try to deploy the AC powered DC40, it tends to be slow for getting ready to work on the insects, and they tend to escape. The Samsung JET95 could be deployed within seconds making them impossible to escape. It would be also good for cleaning the car seats and floors too.

I use a 7 year old titan with power taken off from Screwfix, still going strong and sucks like a sucky thing!
I made the boss get one a couple of years ago and they have changed the design a little bit still good for the price.

Top tip for workshop vacs - throw away the paper bags before use and get some fabric ones. Much more sturdy. Can also reuse them with a little thought....

The Samsung JET95 arrived, and it seems working OK. As suggested, it doesn't have powerful suction as the AC powered old Dyson DC40. But it is light, quick, quiet and easy to vacuum. It is also very easy to vacuum the car floors, but the foot carpets need really strong suction which the battery powered vacuum cannot manage.

Every tool has its merits and weaknesses.

Depends on the use, most household suckers use just a single blower for vacuum and motor cooling. For dirtier work and long life separate blowers for vacuum and motor cooling. That actually helps more than most people realize.

Battery running time is kinda low - about 30 -40 minutes on MID setting, and 10 - 15 minutes for MAX setting. LOW setting is not really useful at all, even it last about 1 hr.

But recharging time is fast. Just sit on the charging dock, and it fully recharges in about 40 min - 1hr max.
After about 30 minutes vacuuming, battery goes low, and then take a wee rest with a cup of tea while it recharges. No problem there.

This cleaner discussion makes me think of a conversation I had with the Mrs. a few weeks back. The dilemma was how best to get rid of the old bag, but I said til death do us part so I'm still with her!
