Urgent help needed!

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
If you do go down the 'stash' route get ready for night long sessions of star jumps and full b'stards if you get found out. That should keep you nice and warm.

I would go for some heavy wool under some really good waterproofs. Perhaps some Sealskinz waterproof socks could be nice to have. A heavy wool hat or balaclava and spare socks and gloves.

If you get a survival tin you will be able to make fire I should think. Good luck and have fun, do report back and give us the details. Brings back some milirary memories:) Cheers.

Did a 3 night survival course on Dartmoor, some years back. we were given a six feet by six feet sheet of builders polythene as a shelter and nothing else! 14 of us started 6 finished. the weather was wet, foggy, cold and this was July!! My Buffalo Jacket and wind shirt were the only thing that kept me there for the duration, i wouldn't have parted with them for anything. very fed up and miserable and glad when it was over. After a couple of days of good food and some descent kip i realised what a fantastic experience it had been. not sure it will be enjoyable, but sure it will be an incredible and memorable experience!! i look forward to reading about it.

hey up dude , , carbo load the week before you go , be prepared to "borrow bits from ANY local " dont let the instructors into your head, go down for a couple of days if you can . get a feel for the place, after all you would be given maps and a lay of the land during your orders phase, GROUND, SITUATION etc etc . water should be your number 1 priority, good luck dont let them grind you down

nenook

Okay mate, been there, done it, got the T-Shirt, etc, think about the Human essentials for the short period of time you're going to be on the ground, thats Shelter and water - your're instructors will be using 'pick up' points to catch you out, ie, Shelter = leeside locations and water = streams respectively !!

Forget the comforts and be happy in the knowledge you can rough it for a week !!

Good info- slightly reassuring to read that some posters have done it before. I take confort in the knowledge that a) you aren't dead and b) you havn't lost your fingers to frostbite, so can type.

I've been eating like a horse these last couple of days....

The amusing thing is, immediately after the course ends (i.e. friday night)- i'm supposed to be joining the rest of the regfor a 45km endurance march across all the pointy bits of the brecon beacons. Oh, how i'll be laughing!

I'd say stay away from the locals, they might be very welcoming to your face, but are actually set up to catch you out. Also if you are in an E&E situation, locals would not always be open to you.

He's right - in the films they either turn out to be werewolves or a sect worshipping some pagan god. Steer clear of locals :P

i would take a cheap coat i didnt like.
i would pull the lining out and put a few meters of wool sheet in it, and a long bit of paracord and some twine, and anything else soft you can think of, then sew it back up, it should just feel like a coat if they check.
i would make a small hole in the sole of my boot, under the inner lining jobbie, and put a peanut lighter in it.

but you dont want to cheat so thats up to you. however with nothing dry for miles around i would want something that will light. some elastic bands?

Most of the streams have small trout in them,if you are in conifer's you'll not be that far from Fernworthy resevoir,a long line baited with earthworm could turn up a nice trout.Theres partridge around, look out for roosting birds in the trees(not partridge). You can drink from the streams without worry, obviously the nearer the source the cleaner it is.:)

now theres not going to be much to eat on the moor at most times off the year due to the soil and erosion
plenty of rabbits squirrels and other stuff (to poach) plus small fish in some of the rivers and streams

if they check you they might find them, but i would certainly try to hide something like that.
how about a set of slingshot bands? it would help with taking small game and as long as you can have a knife you should be able to make a slingshot.
