If you look at the original, you can see a faint line along the bottom. I believe this may have been where the spade shoe was located. The original (iron) will have rotted away under water, leaving the wood, while the shoe would have survived and the wood rotted if it were in an earth find.

did you ever get this mended ?

polyurethane, waterproof pva wood glue, epoxy.

Mitre mate is superglue, so is not flexible. It will snap.

If applied properly, all the top will bond stronger then the wood is to itself.
Be sure to damp the wood slightly before using PU if the wood is very dry and as has been said, clamp.
