My 8" Fish River is from point to point. The edge length is a bit longer. Maynard does not seem to make ulus based on exact fixed patterns so each of his offerings have a degree of variability due to the saw stock he is using. My 8" ulu likely will not not be exactly like any other of his 8" versions.
As to wood....I have only used my ulus for shaving not a guillotine type of cut. I think for pointing framing pegs etc an ulu with a fixed point could work but I am uncertain how durable it would be in long term use like that.
I have not found my ulus to be a tool I use for most wood working tasks. I can certainly make a fuzz stick etc for fire prep, but I do find a traditional knife or ax much easier.
