Turned Candlesticks

Here are a pair of candlesticks that I turned in my pole lathe from some spalted sycamore. A friend of mine saved a log for me when she was having some overhanging trees cut back by the council. At the time I had plenty of green wood to be turning, so this log sat in her garage for the best part of a year. Now it is rather attractively stained, so ideal for decorative stuff rather than domestic utensils. Having dried out somewhat the wood was lighter and easier to spin in a human powered lathe, however the downside is that drier wood is more difficult to cut.

Here are some closer views of the spalting.

The cups that the candles sit in are 22mm end feed plumbing reducers, with a little beaten copper collar around them to catch wax drips.

Thanks for looking.
