Trekking poles

Hi,

I want to try some trekking poles. I don't have bad knees or anything, but I would like to keep it that way, and they can also be used for setting up a tarp etc.

So any recommendations? Or anybody know of any good deals on a pair at the moment? I was looking at the Leki Voyager at £44, or I could spend triple the amount for carbon poles that are half the weight.

Thanks, I'll have to have a wander over to the posh end of South Wales and have a look in the charity shops there

@Dan00001 Avoid those with locking mechanism that have the pole halves to be twisted.
Instead choose flip locks, like this:

Twistlocks tend to loosen up over time. Fliplocks do not. They stay locked.

I have found the Naturehike ones to be very sturdy, and I think they are the OEM for Alpkit on a lot of their equipment: Available Here very cheap from China with delivery within a week or so.

Have a gander at Pacer Poles, been using them for over five years, best I've ever found.

And simply old if you're using just one.

I got a set (fliplocks, cork-type handles, robust) from the Centre Aisle in Lidl last year, might be worth a look as it's the time of year they might get them back in.

I would like to have a makila or two and would not mind a nice kis fokos both have worked as trekking poles in the past.

I got them years ago. One is still useable. The other bent in the bottom segment so I couldn't collapse fully then I think jammed up completely. Binned it I think. Not sure I'd go back to them. Mind you my black diamond poles didn't survive long.

I remember that I used them once on terrain not best suited and both poles got jammed at the same time. No idea what exactly happened but they kind of catapulted me in a somersault landing on my feet with the poles released. If anyone had seen it I would have won a gymnastics competition with that completely accidental manoeuvre! The poles were intact despite flicking my then 84kg plus backpack load.

I later read that it's not recommended to use poles across certain terrains like very rocky ground. If you do then leave your wrists out of the loops just in case. I'm no longer a fan of poles.

However BD I think are better than leki. Mountainkings are cheapish and not as good as the specialist brands like leki and BD.

Another vote for Pacer Poles, been using them for about 15 years, great bit of kit...Although I've just looked at the price..Wow
