The nut in its case

This is a Walnut - Juglans regia

The nut can be eaten raw, pickled when green or used in cooking. The tree can be tapped for sap to make sugar like a birch or maple. The green husk is high in vitamin C

The leaves are anti-inflamatory and the husks used to treat diarrhoea. The seeds can make a paste to treat skin problems

A dye can be made from the husks. The bark and rinds dried and powdered make a tooth cleaner.

The wood is hard and tight grained - used in furniture making
