Many of us are out and about in wild and remote places due to our bushcraft interest and also other outdoor pursuits.

Following this MCofS news item earlier this winter................

'Mountain Rescue Helicopters

Chances are if you spend enough time in the hills, you will be directly or indirectly involved in an incident on the hill which involves the use of an RAF Sea King Helicopter. It goes without saying that helicopters can be dangerous if correct protocol is either unknown or not carried out.'

I thought it may be of use to other members to post up this link to advice from the RAF............... http://www.raf.mod.uk/rafsearchandrescue/rafcms/mediafiles/786C1D69_5056_A318_A8A97B2C43CB3E85.pdf

Hopefully some of you will find it useful to know, hopefully not to put in to practice!

As a bystander you are unlikely to work with any of the SAR helos - unless you are the casualty or being lifted as well as them.

In any case the protocal is very simple: do exactly as the the crew say / indicated -- normally the winch operator or winchman as they are the most likely to be communicating with you.

Some of the procedures for Coast Guard differ slighty due to different aircraft -- mostly the entry and exit stuff
