With the gnu!
Has any one used one? They seem pretty good. See here for details.

I'm after a plain old cotton smock to go over a fleece for use around an open fire. It doesn't have to be (particularly) windproof or waterproof. My only reservation is that the Titan smock seems to be quite long and bulky (very heavy cotton). I'm going to be using it in Africa so was looking for something fairly light weight but enough to keep sparks off a fleece and maybe keep the wind chill at bay when driving in open vehicle early in the morning.

Any help much appreciated. :)

I bought one years ago for fishing. I wouldn’t call it bulky and heavy, but its done ok over the years covered in blood n guts, climbing over rocks, and on the boat.

Ahh cheers. My mistake. The photos online make it look relatively bulky and quite long. Does it pack down quite small?

I'd like to play devil's advocate here and say that no, I doubt that smock would be particularly water repellent. Windproof, oh gosh yes. I just had a quick look at the website, and it says it's "heavy weight cotton drill." Drill fabric is a twill weave with moderately thick threads. Not quite as thick or heavy as denim, but it's getting there. And as the smock is relatively heavy, I'd say that it would soak up water like as sponge and not swell up like Ventile. So as a hardwearing tough windproof outer layer, I'd say go for it and try not to get it wet.

My $0.02 cents!

Cheers Adam. Yes I think as the smock stands it would probably soak up water (not a bad thing in Africa!), however, I was thinking of treating it with Nikwax TX Direct which should give it a durable water-repellent (DWR) finish that will last for a wee while. It should then shrug off the occasional light mist/shower ...... nothing heavy though.

At that price just what you want around a campfire with “sparks” and keep the £200 Ventile one for parade (Friday night at your favourite watering hole if you prefer) use.

Cheers!

I have the similar greys apollo smock. I use it in the garden. It is really tough and well worth the money. I keep it on when it is raining and it only lets in the water when it is really wet. This is when I come in for a cuppa. I reckon it could be easily proofed.
My only criticism of mine is the poor fit. Too Baggy. So I am going to sew in some drawcords. It is also really nice and warm. It is a really versatile bit of kit and I am hoping it looks ok with a drawcord- fashion and all that!

Cheers for the link BM, think I might get me one of them....Whats happened to your lion btw...?

Thought I'd change it! Haven't quite got round to sorting a new one yet :o ........ watch this space :D .

Edit: ........ and changed :cool:

How are they on sizes? I vary between L and XXL depending on brand!

Chest size isn't a great guide for me, as I'm tall and have long arms.

I took a risk and ordered a large and it's a fairly good fit on me, the body maybe a tiny bit on the baggy side but the arms are perfect.

I'm 6ft with a 43 inch chest. It may shrink slightly after the first few washes.

The Titan Website (drop down size) says:-

S = 30" - 34"
M = 36" - 38"
L = 40" - 42"
XL = 42" - 46"
XXL = 48" - 52"
XXXL (or King Size as they call it!) = 54" - 60"

I'll see if I can measure the arm length tonight. I'm off to Kenya on Friday so running around like a blue arsed fly at the moment trying to get everything sorted so may not manage it.

I have no connection, in any way, to this company.

I've recently bought one of these.
It's very well made in a tough, heavy weight denim-like cotton material with strong stitching throughout.
Although it is not water resistant, I find it very wind-proof and after a couple of washes, as soft as suede.
At the price it's retailing at, you will not have to worry about sparks too much.
The small (7x4cm) red and yellow company logo on the chest pocket is the only non o.d. part of the smock but I suppose this can be removed by teasing out with a needle if you so wish.
They also deliver quickly.

Happy trails...torc.
