Evening all,

I'm looking to get a 1L Thermos flask, I like the look of the Stanley ones but the reviews on Amazon are very poor indeed.

I'm looking for something robust to sling in the fishing bag although it will spend most of it's life in the car as I do a lot of driving for work

I've tried all the supermarket cheapys and none of them last very long so.............any recommendations chaps ?

Go with thermos the brand I've done all sorts of jobs for work and I've never been let down with the thermos I have which keeps coffee made up in the flask piping hot for 8 hrs and if putting just hot water in still warm at the 12 hr mark. Mines the huge 1.8 litre and it's been great. I've had others and they've come no where near.

Sent from somewhere?

some 'Thermos' flasks state liquid will be kept hot for 24 hours while other ones state 12 hours, i'd go for the 24 hour ones as they keep drinks hotter for longer, at present i am using the Thermos Stainless King 1.2 litre 24 hour verson and find it very good http://www.thermosonline.co.uk/stor...product/311/m/product_writer/m2/write_product

PS - this flask is a lot heavier than Macaroons reccomendation which is also a 24 hour flask, though it is bigger and holds more liquid if thats a priority.

I've had both Thermos and Stanley. Been well satisfied with both. Both carry a lifetime guarantee.

This is my current Thermos. I've had it for about 5 years and bounced it around in the truck and at work before I retired.

Bear in mind though that the ratings (Keeps things hot 12 hours, 24 hours, etc.) depend on it being full at the time. Once you start using whatever's inside, you're both losing some of the heat trapped in mass and letting cool air in to replace it.

After a few years where the cheapos were good and one kept me going for ages eventually the quality slipped and I was replacing a flask every six months.
Just recently bought one like in your link and it seems great so far. No fancy popper things in the lid to break, keeps hot water hot for ages and I've made a carrying bracket for it out of 100mm waste pipe with a bottom made from a plywood circle. Just do a cutout for the handle. Keeps it upright and fits onto my van bulkhead.

Stanley have a dreadful reputation of late - and my experience bears this out. HOWEVER, a friend had similar bad experiences but tells me his current flask is fine and has been for three years. So maybe they've sorted things out now.

My partner and I both have Thermos - the 1.2 ltr version with the handle. In three years, each has been replaced three times! This said, my current one has lasted over a year so far.

I would strongly advise retaining the receipt if buying either of these makes. With a little cunning, it is possible to find a Freepost address for Burton McCall so returning a Stanley is at least free. Both Stanley and Thermos replace these things without question, but it is a hassle having to return them. Both are made in China these days.

Robbi, are you able to get L.L. Bean products in the UK? They sometimes cost a bit more, but are made very well. Here is the vacuum thermos bottle that I use for hot chocolate or cold drinks.

I use an older model and like it very much. It fits the water bottle mesh-pocket on the side of my daypack. They also make a smaller (17 oz) version of the same bottle. You can even get your name engraved on it if you wish. :)

On a stainless steel flask,to get a flask to keep the water hotter longer......'preheat' it with boiling water first :bigok:

Very true. Also bear in mind that manufacturers ratings are generally taken under perfect conditions. If the outside temp is -2, then the flask can't perform as well, especially once opened and poured from.

I've been using an Aladdin Challenger 1ltr for a few years in UK winter outdoor conditions, some of which have been very cold. So far it's been good, I usually start at 7.30 am and can still brew tea, or at least have a Bovril at about 3 PM.

I just take hot water with me so I can choose my drink, or do some noodles. I've just filled it (primed with boiling water) and stood it in the garden. I'll do a temp check at about midnight to see if it's still performing as well as it used to (not been used in 2 years).

If it isn't, then the Thermos Thermocafe will replace it. £11.99 on Amazon has to be a bargain.

Just before christmas I bought a thermos 'light and compact '1 lt jobbie, got it price matched at john lewis for £20.
I preheated it and then tried it over the next 24 see if it kept upto the claimed 24hr hot, it was left in an unheated conservatory so approx 5deg and I reckon would still have made a passible cuppa the next day (must have tested 5 times over that period) it is nice and lightweight yet feels sturdy enough and the best bit it is only a third max bigger than my little .5lt petrol station job. Happy to recommend.
