Few days ago I made the "SAK Mini Fire Capsule" using a tiny straw, some cotton wool and Petroleum Jelly. I carry my Mini Fire Capsule on the SAK Corkscrew for emergency/survival situations...

The Vaseline will liquidise with gentle warming and will therefore become easier to work with for some applications.

If you find a plastic pot the same diameter as cotton wool cleansing pads then you can can add two at a time and pour in hot liquid Vaseline on top. This produces very effective compacted fire lighting fuel pads that will last you ages. You could even mix in Magnesium shavings if you want to be really flash!!!

This is not a bad idea. I can make a fistful of these and strew them over my gear. Then I always know I have one with me. Somewhere.
I've also discovered that my girlfriend's toilet bag contains a universe of different tinder and fire starting material, but I dear not tread there unless every other source have been thoroughly exhausted first.
