My original Woods Throne
succumbed to age and life in the woods and started breaking...
and while tripod chairs
are quick and easy to build - they lack style
So it was time to make a new Throne
The legs and back uprights are green Rowan, the top rung green Ash, the cross members are seasoned Hazel and Ash, the seat and back a mix of Rowan, Hazel and Ash.
The idea is that the legs will shrink as they season and grip the cross pieces even tighter - at the moment they are simply tapered and jammed together with some of the looser ones "blind foxed" with hidden wedges. The lashing helps prevent the legs falling off, despite everything being "sprung" to tension the joints.
The cordage is Oiled Brazilian Sisal (otherwise known as "Baler Twine" - if it holds Welsh Farms together it should cope with a chair!).
I will let the Throne season then I will give it a good oiling and wax all the cut ends to avoid water ingress.
These chairs look nicer in the woods - and last longer - than folding plastic and ali camp chairs ... especially better than pink folding camp chairs ... even if they are not quite as portable!
