Okay so for those of you (biker) who wanted to see what kind of things I do with catapult frames here is one from today:

It started off with a mammoth tree fork that measured 3.5 inches in diameter at the base and each fork measured 2 inches in diameter.

I first started off removing the bark and then doing 6 courses of microwave treatment to start artificially drying out the wood. Then I set about carving. All the work seen has been done by hand using hand tools only consisting of a stanley knife, kershaw half ton knife, wood saw and sand paper.

I have spent a total of 8 hours carving, whittling and sanding to get it to the stage shown below. It is now having it's final heat treatment in the oven and then will be finished with a coat of yacht varnish which is waterproof and very hard wearing.

In case you are wondering why it's called the priest it's because I have designed it with big owe hunting in mind. Because it is very large and heavy it is both a catapult AND acts as a priest for finishing off any quarry.

Feel free to ask any questions.

Starting point - Stanley knife gives a sense of scale

Rough shaping has begun using my Kershaw

Even more shaping, note all the wood shavings on the floor.

Marked for rough cutting to length

Rough cut to length I now started shaping it into an ergonomic shape. I did this by marking around my thumb, forefinger and pinky finger and then started carving the contoured recesses. I only did these three fingers as they are principally the only ones used when holding a catapult against the pull of the elastic.

Photo showing it in my open hand

Photo showing it in my closed hand. Note how my fingers recess nicely into the hammer grip.

And this is the final article after sanding. It still looks a little rough but |I really like the rustic look.

Next is a final oven heat treatment and then a coat of clear yacht varnish.

My intention is to equip this with triple layer theraband gold tapered from 25-15mm either side. This will give me massive power but be able to maintain accuracy.

Cheers

Dan

Phone typo! should have been "big old hunting"

Once I have equipped it with bands I plan on using it on my permissions to take rabbits etc.

Well done mate with the effort you have put in to it, but does it really need to be that big ? I think most people hunting with a catapult would agree that double theraband gold is more than ample to take out small game. I don't think that will be that accurate for you either as it will take so much effort to pull the bands that it will be difficult to hold still.
Also bear in mind that you don't want to cause unnecessary suffering to an animal so if you aren't confident it's going to be a clean kill then don't do it. Practice until you are good enough to do it.
If you are proficient in the use of a catapult for hunting then please disregard my comments, and carry on.

No problem perrari. I hunt with my catapults on a regular basis and can hit coke can sized targets at 35 yards consistently. As for its size it was really a homage to the original fork. It seemed a shame to make a small catty out of so much wood so I decided on going chunky and big.

My plan with this is to go for a BIG power rig. I have some really nice compact hunting rigs but I thought why not go to the extents of possibility. I'm going to fit is with double theraband for testing and see how it pans out as I only have a 32" draw from fork to cheek.

Fair enough Danny ! A coke can at 35 yards consistently ! Now that is something for me to work towards ! Not too bad at 15 yards but a long way to go.

Yeah. I really enjoy catty shooting as it has to be one if the simplest ways to enjoy shooting of some description. I do however need to make a stronger ammo catch box as the other day I put a nice hole in my shed shooting 10mm hex nuts from another of my home made catty's

I saw a video from gamekeeper john where he ran single, double and then trebble gold bands thru a chronograph and found double to be the most powerful way to go.

Personally its a little chunky for me, and I have gorilla hands, but each to their own. I admire your efforts all the same, it will be interesting to see this develop!

What ammo are you using ?, house bricks ?

That comment caused me to mop up cornflakes off the keyboard. Thanks for the Monday morning laugh!

Nice looking catty Danny, the size of that beast it could be classed as a howitzer! Nice work and impressive shooting if you can hit a coke can at 35yrd. Looking forward to seeing more of this once it's completed. Thanks for showing it (and the link from the GIO thread)

Finally finished and with bands. It's had a coat of Yacht varnish and is fitted with double tapered TBG.

Here's a video of me shooting it.

My backstop is 18mm MDF board which takes the impact well.
