Tarp snake skins

Thought about making some James ?, I used to have them on a Hennessy and there's not much to them. I hear the nylon mesh stuff makes good snakes skins.

To be honest I didn't think much to them, you just end up with a long snakey thing that you have to fold up anyway, much prefer to just stuff it into a sack.

If you're thinking about putting it away when it's strung up then and couple of s-biners or mini Karabiners with prusiks will let you unclip it easy enough.

I'm with Shewie, I've never really got on with them. I have mates who have bought them and used them once, too.

I carry a small microfibre cloth and dry the tarp off before packing it concertina style on the ridgeline, then winding the ridgeline round the rolled concertina to keep it compacted and stop the line tangling.

I thought snakeskins would work with a tarp, but they are a pain. They don't compact the tarp down anywhere near the size you can by folding them. The guylines come undone, get tangled and are a nightmare to sort out., and the whole thing just gets in the way far more when it is in your pack.

From my experience of snakeskins I'd say save your money and just use a stuff sac, or simply fold then tie the tarp up. The problem is what to do with the sausage that you've created once the snakeskins are stuffed. It's either flexible, but not particularly compact, so you might as well not have bothered in the first place. Or else it's compact but too stiff to bend or coil easily to get it into your pack.

If you want to turn your hammock into a sausage for packing, why not just un-tie one end and keep twisting the hammock until it compacts into a thin tight line and pack into your stuff sack? I have done this before when it was raining hard and the ground was soaked. I have'nt used snake skins so I don't know if they do anything special to the hammock, but it seems silly to pay money for something you can do for free?

I undid it when I got home and packed it back normally in the dry

They are superb for hammocks. But not so for tarps. With hammocks it just makes setting up and packing quick and easy. Keeps the hammock dry and insect free and out of the way during the day if you want. You stuff your hammock into a stuff sack anyway, the snakeskin is just an alternative to that.

I have one for my DD hammock & it's a great time & space saver, but would be too bulky for just a tarp.

Yes Rich, i saw one of Shugs videos and got thinking. I have recently swapped from a DD tarp to a Hennessy hex fly - which i prefer. But because the HH doesn't have suspension loops along the ridge, it isn't as easy to fold away neatly like the DD.

As for tangling the guy lines, the HH has small pockets at each corner to stow these, so they would be packed away neatly :)

I have considered making a pair from an old torn DD tarp, but just wondered if there was a vendor in the market & what people thought.

HH tarps are made to be packed into skins, so it would work better with them obviously. Remember too that HH are designed for the whole package (tarp and hammock) to go into snakeskins, which is a much better alternative IMO. Without ridge line loops, I'd choose snakeskins.

I use the larger HH tarp which doesn't fit in the SS but i still like SS for the hammock, keeps it clean and dry when packing up.

There are bigger snakeskins out there that fit the larger hexi.

I contacted HH a while ago and they said
Hi Lawrence,
The Snake skins won't cover the hammock and the Hex Fly together.
This is because the Hex Fly ties directly to the tree just above the
webbing straps unlike the regular rain fly that attaches to the hammock support ropes.
This can be advantageous when you want to utilize the space underneath the Hex Fly. By collapsing the Snake skins over the hammock you increase the usable space underneath the Hex Fly by about 50%. Also, when the rain fly is wet it is best to store it separately from the hammock bottom.

Dunno mate maybe they do now ?, that email was back in maybe May or June so could be.

I like the look of their new side entry stuff so need to find out what they do. The website is way out of date though and the prices for import going up 'n up 'n up.

I don't think a snakeskin for my tarp would be all together practical. I'd much rather find a pair of clips that would hold a furled tarp in place. That way I could tie out one side as a wind break in fair weather and furl the other side up to stop it flapping about in the wind.
