I spent ages trying to figure that out myself. Eventually coming to the conclusion that it was there to help with pouring.
If you put the hook into the off centre notch and use the little bracket on the front of the pot to tip it up (Use your sleeve to prevent burning) It is really easy to pour liquids out of the pot.
I may be wrong about this being its primary purpose, but It definately works for me. :chill:
