Hello all,

I am looking to get a surplus goretex jacket as a lighter weight waterproof jacket now we are into warmer weather. I have had a bad experience with a used ECWCS jacket I purchased which leaked after 10 minutes in light rain. At £75 for what I was lead to believe was the "Rolls Royce" of military jackets has left me a little bit cautious.

Can anyone recommend a good place to get a surplus military goretex jacket that has been tested/ won't leak.

Thanks.

Endicotts of Exeter, Kevin the owner has new, used or mil-spec ones available at various prices, or Strikeforce Supplies of Frome, Jasper gets lots of unused surplus for reasonable prices, has own webshop or ebay outlet. I have no affiliations with the stores, but I have purchased a lot from both of them, and other members here will attest to their trustworthiness. One thing, did you try washing the jacket in pure soap, washing again in nikwax or the like and tumble-drying it on a low setting?

Ecwcs would be too warm for summer anyhow, they are superb mind and I've had two now. You must have just been caught out, I doubt the sellers run each one under a shower or anything to test so it is a little like pot luck. Lightweight you have to go with the British ones, with the hood that rolls away into the collar, in new, from endicotts. I got one of my ecwcs from a seller on eBay called broken arrow and my last one I sourced privately. I would use both sources again.

If you want a really lightweight military goretex, search on ebay for something along the lines of 'lightweight MTP waterproof' or 'lightweight MTP goretex'. The search should throw up a number of the new issue MTP goretex jackets made out of gore paclite. They screw up into a size that will fit into a smock pocket, weight almost nothing, and are exceptionally breathable. The downside is no hood (fleece lined collar), and no pockets. Check the photos - if the jacket has chest pockets, then it's just the standard MTP goretex, not the lightweight version. Many of the ebay examples are brand new, so really shouldn't leak.
