Strong Leather Thonging

Twisting thinner thonging gives a very strong result as well.

This is the sort of stuff the Saami use for just about everything.

Take thonging cut from thin leather, soak it and then twist it tightly until it starts to fold around itself. double it over from the middle and then let it twist up.

It's a bit like making rope or nettle cordage.

My leather bootlaces from Ebay (link as above) turned up and they are excellent. very strong and just the right thickness (3mm). They are 120cm long each, which is just perfect for a neck lanyard for knife / compass / whistle etc. The price on Ebay is of course for a pair - didn't think about this at the time !

I like to make a short "fob" for my knives to help pull them out of their sheaths, and the thonging has also proved perfect for that.

Thanks for the tip

Mine haven't made it yet, in fact I haven't seen a postie up our road for a week now.

Sounds like they're just the job though Rich
