I've just updated the thread to show the finished product if anyone's interested in how it turned out. I'm very pleased with it, going to test it out tomorrow.

That was the desired result. Feels good to put a little effort in and make it look the way I want it.Would rather have completely got rid of the GENUINE HICKORY that was stamped into the helve though. But I didn't want to sand it down too much...
Got to say I'm surprised how different it looks. I bet you could make a good profit on that.

It seems to perform well, I don't have much experience with using an axe so I don't have anything to compare it to though. I had a go at this this with it and it worked out alright. Could do with being a bit sharper though.
