Storms Across The Southeast

Heavy thunderstorms have pushed across the southeast; starting in Louisiana and moving east over the last couple of days. Here in the western Florida panhandle we received almost 2 feet of rainfall in during the heaviest two hours last night and it's still raining. Tornadoes hit some areas farther west of us. There has been one confirmed drowning as a car was submerged in the parking lot of a supermarket in Escambia County yesterday. The storm's main body is now moving towards the east coast.

Here are some photos from a Pensacola page on FB:

Two of those pictures of collapsed roads have cars in the collapse; did the drivers go off the road, not seeing the collapsed section or where they parked there?

They're not parked there. I don't know if they went over the edge or were washed off during the collapse. All out roads are on sand so they wash out easily and quickly. It's the substrate we have to contend with.

Also, if they tried to drive through while the water was still flowing, they wouldn't have seen that the roadway underneath was washed out. That's why you should always cross "shallow" floodwaters very, very carefully, if at all.

I'm not sure how accurate those reports are. They're official reports as such but many of the gauging stations are down. The most accurate I've seen seems to be just over 26" in Pensacola (about 40 miles west) and just over 19" here in Crestview over the last 24 hours (MOST of that during the heaviest 2 hour period last night)

Still mind boggling! I thought I'd seen rain in my time but never anything remotely like that!
