Have you got a proper root cellar gregorach?

That is a great book - btw (albeit fairly narrow in its focus)

i wish - I live in a top-floor flat. I've been thinking about excavating one at the allotment, but it's a heck of a lot of hard work, and there isn't really space unless I put it under the shed (when I rebuild it), which then introduces some structural complications... At the moment, I'm thinking of just finding an old fridge and sticking it in the shed. I've kept my tatties in a tea chest in the greenhouse over this winter and lost maybe 50% to frosting, so I reckon a better insulated container will probably work OK in all but the most extreme conditions.

Have you considered clamping rather than cellaring for the spuds? I've found it to be surprisingly effective and a good use of the dormant land space in the winter.

I've considered it, but I have surprisingly little vacant space at any time of the year and it doesn't really integrate with the "no dig" approach that well...
