Ah neat, I hadn't seen one with the sheath in front, like the kukri sheaths to hold the small knives, before My Dad's was just a channel in the leather alongside the knife sheath. It always smelled of tarry twine for some reason

Talking of netting tools, I have a fine bone herring netting needle that belonged to my great, great grandmother; she was a Fife fisherlass. Family stooshie, she married a cooper not a fisherman

I don't know, no one ever mentioned more than the little I've said, and that she wore striped skirts all her days even after marrying the cooper, and that she had her nose stuck in a book every chance she had .......and she argued, politely mind you, with the Minister over his preaching ......maybe you're right enough then

Interesting question.
I'm not really up on the knife law but I think that with the way things are currently that the law would still frown on a marlin spike on a folding knife if it were over 3". Although you could argue that it's not a blade.
Do the spikes on Jack Knives lock ?

I guess the next question is, "How sharply pointed?" Although if it's a folding pocket-knife with a marlinspike, then the "cutting edge to its blade" seems to be what matters. Clear as mud.

Awls and Spikes, blunt and sharp are very useful. Sure you can make a spike out of a stick but for heavy work, metal is the way to go! I've got a miniature awl that it fantastic for stitching and I used to have a larger one for general purpose use.

I was looking at basketry awls a while ago until I saw an old RM episode where the basket maker use a piece of curved bone which made more sense. I'm just waiting on a decent bit of bone

Yes that is my tutorial on the dog bone awl sheath.

Carrying a sharp awl stuck in a cork or a piece of leather has its risks...this rawhide dogbone seemed to be a perfect answer. The outer braid is all decorative too...just the rawhide core would work a treat and is a quick thing to make.

The Myerchin spike is really a nice tool for a blunt. Their folding knives with spikes are also quite nice.

Another awl I use loads is a blunt belting awl....rounded edges and a wedge blade so it does not cut leather and other materials.
