Looks like its standing on 4 short legs with 4 long legs poised to catch.
On a thistle head.

Enoplognatha ovata (sorry, it doesn't have a common name) is a reasonably common spider with a cream colored abdomen and pinky-red stripes. It sounds as if that is what you saw - and it is harmless. It is very variable in terms of color but there are lots of pictures available on the internet.
