I have no pictures to show and I own few examples.
The Dene', Cree and Metis First Nations people do a lot of bead work of flowers.
The sizes, shapes, numbers and positions of the petals and leaves are indications of cultural sources.
I can't help but wonder if there might not be regional differences in the painted flowers and other designs?

The canal barge people, were they of a specific culture/sub culture/ethnicity?

( I do not know how to write it so it is PC)

The examples above are folk art designs from the Bohemian part of Europe, heavily influenced by the Roma that stem from Romania, and travelled all around Europe.

For a long time it was assumed that many were of Roma origins but there is little evidence to support that as far as I can see. Roma art has some similarities but also many differences.

There have been a few theories as to the origin of the "Roses and Castles" art style over the years but the current consensus is that it bears greatest similarity to the fashionable ceramic artwork of the time around the opening of the first canals. Possibly produced by the same artists or possibly just copied by the boat owners.

From there it seems to have developed into a tradition which preserved that early style.

There are certainly regional differences, partly arising from the artists working in diffent boatyards. The leaves I use are for example considered to be a Northern style rather than Midland types.

Designs seem to have been mostly variations on the same themes and shaped by the available spaces on the items painted.
