So who's got an iPad then and what do you think?

Been given one to evaluate at work. Not my cup of tea at all - rubbish battery life, virtual keyboard not as good as a proper one.

No discernible functional improvement over a good branded netbook at half the price (which has a hard drive, better battery life, proper keyboard etc.)

Defined here as "a solution looking for a problem"

Title says it all really, I couple of my mates have got them and i think they're very nice.

I am replying from mine and use it for about 75% of my web browsing. It just seems so much easier to pick up and turn on and brows right away. If you think of it more as you would say a TV as an appliance then it all makes more sense. I use mine as a combination book, tv, web browser and games console. Works great as all of these. I don't use it as a word processor, etc. I have a proper pc for that. It is, though I spent a daft amount of dosh on it, far to expensive. Personally unless you have some spare moneys or another half that wants to split the bill (like me) then I'd wait to see what other slates come out.

i really don't like these sort of gadgets. they are trying to make something that we will become addicted to using and in turn will feel that we cannot do without. where in fact you can easily live without one.

i can almost understand an iphone (even though imo a phone should be a phone an no more) but the ipad i just don't get. i would rather have a small laptop where you get a real keyboard and a screen that won't get scratched or broken while im carrying it about.

Aps? who needs them?

i won't be buying one thats for sure!

Red has pretty much summed it up for me, small, slow processor, low ram, negligable storage space, virtual keyboard, way over priced and like the iPhone is popular with SAL's (S ad A pple L over's) so buy a netbook if you want small and good battery life, a laptop if you want performance and realistic storage.

Apple has had its day IMHO, Windows 7 and the faster PC's have seen to that :) (I'll wait now for both barrels off any onsite SALs ;) )

How about more thoughts form people that have them.

is the battery life really bad? I thought it was about 10 hours. My mate packs his away with a wireless keyboard and uses it all the time instead of his macbook pro. Another friend of mine has got a good deal on one through his work so it wasn't so much of a hit for him.

More than anything i'm interested in those that have got one and what they think, obviously red's not enthused :D

I suspect my view is covered by spending my life evaluating technology & risks objectively Tone (i.e. bang for buck). I have spent time doing stuff with them, and evaluated from both home and business perspective.

For me, the lack of a hard drive is a real limiting factor - meaning if you aren't on a Wifi hotspot, it becomes effectively useless. I see the potential as web browser (which its fine at), book reader (handicapped by lack of hard drive so no good for journeys etc.) and viewer of video (ditto can't use "offline"). The lack of input control (without additional expense) is an issue. We also believed you shouldn't need a special ap to use the ipad as a phone.

By way of example of something you might want to consider instead - consider something like the Sony mini 210. 250Gb hard drive, 1Gb RAM (but get a 2Gb upgrade), good battery life, proper keyboard, WiFi etc. With the long life battery (available as a free option) - it will run all day.

If you shop around you should get one for £250

Tony, what you really want is someone to say "It's OK to buy one Tony, go on, treat yourself if thats what you want" so there you are, go and treat yourself lad, knock yourself out;)

I'm away from home for a week just now and using a 3 USB internet dongle plugged into a £35 IBM T22 laptop, almost ten years old, still doing a good job for the net; state of the art quad core PC and 24" monitor is a bit big for the train :)

I see the iPad being used as a presentation device, possibly for estate agents showing clients round houses and they want to show them alternatives available, or possibly wedding photographers and suchlike, but it's nothing you can't do on a laptop really, it just adds that 'cool' factor if that's your thing. I was quite surprised how heavy it is as well.

He he, no, not at all :D I've a nice Dell 14" laptop that's not too cumbersom to take around with me when needed and i've got a HTC Hero which can do docs etc if i really need to. What I was after was some real life opinions on them because i was playing with one the other day and thought it was quite nice.

Red, when you say no hard drive, do you mean that the16, 32 or 64gb solid states don't count because you need a larger capacity?

Indeed Tone - 16Gb is woeful storage these days. Thats less than two single sided twin track DVDs.

Its really not intended (in our view) as a "stand alone device" - but as part of your "iLife" (I kid you not, they use the term).

Its neat and stylish and clever - but very limited other than as a browser / basic player. I can see it in the home if you use something like a NAS device across a wireless network. If you web enabled that private storage, you could use the iPad as a presentation device primarily.

As nice as it may look and feel - it's primarily a device for consuming content, not producing. THerefore, comparing it to a netbook or regular computer is a bit moot. If I were looking for a consuming device, I would not buy it, since I don't like the vendor lock-in. It's curated computing and it won't hold. I would wait a bit for the inevitable Android/ChromeOS answer.

Interesting you mention 'home'. 3 out of the 4 friends I know with iPads have all said they're great around the house, but not so much when out and about.
I've also had an argument with someone who was convinced the Ipad would replace his home PC, until I asked him where his iTunes would live :)

I've also heard they're bringing out a new version of the iPad. As you know, technology is always moving foward, and things get smaller. It'll have additional features too. Rumour has it, it will be called the 'iPhone' ;)
