I saw a how-to on the instructables website, and gave it a go

http://www.instructables.com/id/Pipe-Tools,-Garden-Shovel/

A bit of pipe, cut halfway through

then lengthways....

carefully bent out with pliers....

A bit of hammering.....

shaping with a hacksaw and file.....

finished, and a hollow handle for loopaper or a bag.

It took about 20mins to make, and a better finish could be done with more care.. This waas steel piping, about 1mm. I think aluminium wouldnt be robust enough...

I did something similar at school once, thanks for reminding me though John. SWMBO could do with a new trowel for the garden.

Just the job - I was looking for a small trowel I could attach a stick to to move embers around on the Dutch oven etc. - guess what I'll be knocking up :D

I already have an idea that will suit my needs perfectly - I'll post a pic if it works

I made shovel like that a while ago and you where supposed to carve a handle and insert it into the tube on the back.
