Don't have metal scraps - wood I have tonnes (literally) - never got into metal working though :(. I'll hit the charity shops - I assume the needles are plastic covered?

Nope, bare metal, they tend to be the older ones but it don't matter if they are a bit battered for this (which is probably why they end up in charity shops). I'll have to score some more as I've been using up all the singletons and bent jobs.

You can always burn the plastic coating off...
I use old knitting needles for pot bails :) I just cold bend them and have not had a failure yet:)
