Sleeping Bags - More than 1?

I was just wondering if many people use 1 sleeping bag all year or do they have separate ones for the seasons?

At the moment I have the army doss bag and waiting on the Alpkit Skyhigh range coming back in stock to get a lighter one. The doss bag is great but it was too warm down at the moot with it and coped ok whilst camping in late November up here.

I have about 6 to chose from..... all the way from a home made blanket fabric bag, through Carinthia jungle bag to a Nanok -10 Comfort down bag.
I summer I tend to use very little - just a light blanket or the Carinthia a a duvet - but in winter I have been known to team the -10 down with other bags to get truely warm at temps like -15! :)

I have two. One is a lightweight Quechue bag I bought at a Decathlon store in Shanghai to sleep on the Great Wall about 7 years ago. The other is a Snugpak Expedition and it's tremendous in the winter...just so much more bulky than the Quechua one!

I used to have several, and still have a few  for winter, its my Lafuma altitude bag, good for -17 extreme elasticated knee panels for shifting around ;) I use this in tent or hammock. For spring to autumn if I use a bag at all, its my old karrimor down bag. Then I have a massive one that is twinned with swmbos when were glamping :p

I used to use about 4 bags, ME, Alpkit and 2 x Rab Quantum Endurance (400 an d600).

To be honest I just use the Rab QE 600 now. Good quality down rather than weight is the key to a down bag's rating, when used in conjunction with good ground insulation it is the dogs danglies. Stick with a warm bag - you can always vent it, stick a leg out, use it as a duvet etc. Too many options will give you the option to get it wrong one day :)

I have several, for the really cold months I have a Woodlore Golden Eagle, which has kept me toasty at -40 in a snow-trench, colder than the manufacturer reckoned it was good for, these days I can just wrap my self in my extra long shemagh, the nights are very warm just now.

I have 4 bags for ground dwelling and then 2 top quilts and underquilts for hammocking.

I've just about got every season covered, combining two sometimes if it's -15 or lower.

Just the one but I don't camp in -40 °C nor at + 4O°C so my humble Snugpac sleeper Xtreme suits me fine........................I don't have storage space for a collection anyway.

I have four and use them dependant on the temperature to be expected. I also occasionally combine to keep warm. I nearly died of exposure once and now need to watch myself.

Hmm interesting. If I got another down bag would it be easy to combine with another if I try it out in really cold conditions?

I have never thought about getting a top quilt for the hammock. I just use the sleeping bag. What sort of temps can they go down to if you combine it with say a snugpak UB and has anyone got any links to them with info?

It will improve things but not as much as you may imagie it would. Down needs to 'loft' and the process of one bag stuffed inside another restricts and compacts the down so that it doesn't loft to it's full potential. Even manufacturers like Rab have to take into account the textile that is used to make a sleeping bag as it's weight restricts the loft of fine quality down.

I have two bags. One is rated to 30F (0C) which I use for three season backpacking. The second is a 0F (-20C) for winter backpacking. You could theoretically use the 0F (-20C) bag all year round, but you will just be carrying unnecessary weight, and causing unnecessary wear to your cold weather bag.

A 600g down 3 season bag goes with me on most trips through the year, including winter. In the hammock, its good down to -5 (+3 c rating). I sleep hot :)

For proper cold camps (forecast -5 or colder), a much thicker winter down top quilt comes with me.

If I'm car camping, I tend to use a cheaper synth bag to save using my expensive down stuff.
