I have the British army jungle bag which I think is part of the modular system though an old part. Thought I would get ready for winter and ordered the medium which is the second part. It came today in a huge box and thought yea must be loads room to spare. But I opened the box and it was full. It’s a bit of a whooper was surprised. But needs must can’t afford any thing flash this year. Will try compress it with some cordage

Most folks use dry bags to stuff their sleeping bags for carrying. Other than that they're better left opened up. Hang them in the wardrobe if necessary, sort of thing.

Dry bags, especially the ones with compression straps really do reduce the bulk of the bag though.
I have a British Army sleeping bag, but mine came with the waterproof 'bucket' boot thing. I don't use that.
I'm not a squaddie trying to get a couple of hours kip, ready to rise in seconds with his boots on, and still keep his bag clean and dry.

Others here know vastly more than I do but I know that there are all sorts of British Army bags. Not all of them are modular.

I have an old 90 pattern bag. It comes with a separate very powerful crush sack, a very complicated liner and the best bivi sac I have ever owned. However it isn’t Modular. You either have the standard one like mine or the Arctic one which is a different animal.

Since you were surprised I’m wondering if the two bags you have are the same system.

Hi yes the medium I have just bought is the modular and was sold as such it has the ties on it to attach the smaller bag inside.
My jungle bag I all ready had is also modular and has the ties to attach inside the big one. I was just surprised how big the big one is. I have found few YouTube videos on making a compression sack or just use cord so will check them out. The jungle is very comfy so if the big was is as good all is well. Bears being cold :)

I use the 90 pattern all year round just zipped or not with a bivi bag. Stuff both in my Bergen.
I sometime use snugpak centre zips but it’s mostly the above one
