I want a Sleeping bag that will cope with british winters and british summers in relative comfort, what temperature rating would you reccomend?

would -5 be ok, or would -9/12 be better.

Thanks

That depends upon where in Britain you are, in the Lizard -5. In the Cairngorms -12 and then some.

You will probably find both of these warm in the summer. I have given up on this battle and have a summer bag, and a winter bag. Then I am always comfy (in theory).

BTW I received the Rab S12 today. Got it out for a sneaky peak. Nice bit of kit. It's for sale in the classifieds thread if you head for the -12 end.

Matt,

Temperature ratings on sleeping bags are not really all they're cracked up to be. Call them "guidelines" if you will. From what I've been told, sleeping bag temperature ratings are meant to describe the maximum comfortable temperature conditions that a naked human body can sleep in.

Consider this: My basic sleeping bag is a high-loft down filled bag with a temperature rating of -7 seven degrees. I have slept comfortably with it in a tent at temperatures approaching -20 degrees celcius. All I had to do was wear a warm toque (woolen hat for those of you not accustomed to Canadian English) and a fleece jacket overtop of my standard base layer underwear

I hope this helps.

Well mate if you are looking for a good rated sleeping bag, i suggest the british army sleeping bag its synthetic filled and i have personally slept in mine in a various of tempertures from 28°c(thats at night not during the day) in iraq to -23°c in sennelager in germany. I must say i was a tad warm :lmao: in iraq but in sennelager i was comfortable, i also had a bivi bag over my sleeping bag and a therma-rest in between my sleeping bag and bivi bag in -23°c conditions. The only con with them is there dont pack down small they are quite bulky.

hope this is helpful
