Braved the army bivy last night and enjoyed no bugs to be seen of any sort. The ground was bumpier underneath that I thought. So the thermarest didn’t cut it need bit more thickness. So I guess if I get some thing bivy will have to go on top. That said I reckon my foam mat would have saved the day if I had taken it. Basha done good to and blended in surprisingly well despite being in the open. Was gone early anyway

Good one. I'm envious now because I cannot get away myself. For rough ground bivvies I prefer the foam mat, it levels out the bumps more and cannot puncture/deflate.
I presume you brought the sticks with you. An alternative to that, or a walking staff, are some standard thin tent poles, as thery pack away easily. I've just chopped a shiny 6-section one into 2x 3 sections, but need to paint them now, to hide the shine and make them look natural.

Thank you Falstaff that’s a good idea about the tent poles. People often throw them in fact sure I have some under the stairs. Yes I took couple hazel with me as I knew it was all gorse up there. The mat I have is a self inflating thermarest apparently a good make. But it’s not very thick. Like you say foam mat could saved the day. I am tempted to get a better mat but it’s all money money. Think I will test the foam mat in the evenings when I walk dog would make sense rather than in live camp lol. If I can crack the comfort bit with mattress I really love the bivy camping. I picked up a hammock but you’re really limited where to go with . Where as bivy go dam near anywhere. Very low profile and covert. Been a country lad all my life fishing hunting. Never had the urge to camp until now at 55 but I am loving it. Just nice being in nature.
